Replacing the Heater Core

 

In An SN95 Mustang:

1.       First stop by an Auto shop and have the A/C drained. 6

2.       Remove both of the front seats so you can easily remove the dash. (On the 94-98’s, it’s 4-15mm bolts each seat. Also, if you have facttory seats, you have to disconnect the power cord from each seat.) 

3.       Disconnect the battery. 

4.       Remove the boot around the shifter. This just pulls out.  Remember to disconnect the accessory plug and remove shift knob: 

5.       Open the center console and remove the 2 rubber stops. Unscrew the 2 screws and remove the inside section: 

6.       Remove the center console by removing 4 - 7mm bolts and disconnecting the plugs.  Two are in the center console and two are up where the shifter is. You will have to disconnect the electrical plug and the accessory plug. 

7.       Remove the radio: 

8.       To remove the bezel, remove this 7mm bolt: 

9.       Then it will just pop out: 

10.       Next remove the AC/Heat controls. There are 4 - 7mm bolts holding this in: 

11.       And disconnect the plugs: 

12.       On the driver’s side, remov the 2 - 8mm bolts. Then the plastic piece pops off” 

13.       Then remove the metal plate. It has 2 - 8mm bolts 

14.       Next,  pop off the defroster vent: 

15.       Pop off the door sill molding: 

16.       Then the kick panel molding: 

17.   You can now pull back the carpet to see the damage. There is a push pin holding the carpet to the ceter console. If the carpet is wet, you may want to use a fan here: 

18.   Now take out the steering column. You can leave it in, but it can make the dash even more awkward to take out. Start by removing the plastic around the ignition: 

19.       Lock the steering wheel in place and disconnected it from the steering shaft: 

20.       Remove the metal brace under column. 2 - 7mm bolts: 

21.   Then disconnect all plugs associated with the steering column. You can then  remove the four 13mm nuts holding the column in place: 

22.       Remove the door sill molding and kick panel: 

23.       Unbolt the hood release handle. You need to do this so you can disconnect the plugs. 10mm bolt: 

24.   Disconnect the plugs found in both kick panels label any plugs that look similar. The dash is held in place by the following bolts. Starting on the driver’s side. (3 gold 7mm bolts): 

25.       15mm bolt located near drivers door: 

26.       This 7mm bolt is right above the previous bolt but you have to access it from under the dash: 

27.       7mm bolts under the defrost vent: 45

28.       7mm bolt near passenger door” 

29.       7mm bolt accessed through glove box. Squeeze the sides of the glove box and it should pop down: 

30.       3 gold 7mm bolts on pass side: 

31.       Now you may gently pull on the dash and it should come out easy. Disconnect any remaining plugs: 

32.       Remove retainer Clip on A/C Hose: 

33.       User these tools from Autozone, etc.  They are around $16 for the package: 

34.       Take these 3 bolts off from the inside: 

35.       Loosen this bolt so you can slide the canister out of the way to get to the next bolt: 

36.       Also move this out of the way for easier access: 

37.       Now take this Nut off.  The entire piece of metal comes off…not just a small nut: 

38.       Now gently pull out the big black box: 

39.       Undo the 4 bolts and replace heater core: 

40.       Here is the new core in place: 

41.       Ready to go back in: 

42.       Now just reverse everything. 70

39.                     Undo the 4 bolts and replace heater core:





40.                     Here is the new core in place:

  1. Now just reverse everything. 

NOTES:

·         It will probably help if you have someone help you place the dash back inside the car.  It’s not terribly heavy, but it’s nice to have someone hold it while you bolt it back in.

·         Also, have someone hold the steering wheel while you re-connect it.  It can be a little bit of a bear to get back in the hole.
